Chondroma of the Nasal Septum-A Case Report and Review of Literature.
Pak J Otolaryngol Jan ;28(3):97-9.

A chondroma is a benign cartilaginous neoplasm or tumor, tissue composed of cells that grow in an abnormal way. They are rare in the head and neck region. The sites of predilection in the head and neck region include ethmoid sinus (50%), maxilla (18%), nasal septum (17%), hard palate and nasopharynx including sphenoid sinus (6% each), and alar cartilage (3%). These tumors probably arise from remnants of the embryonal cartilaginous skeleton that escape resorption during endochondral ossification Since its first literary description in 1842, only about 140 cases have been reported. We present the case of a 45-years old female who reported nasal obstruction and intermittent nasal bleeding for 6 months. Nasoendoscopic examination revealed a firm mass arising from the posterior part of nasal septum on both sides. The tumor was removed by wide excision with endoscopic guidance. Histopathological examination showed hyaline cartilage cells arranged in lobules. No nuclear atypia or hyperchromsia was found. Post operative follow up has been done and till now no recurrence of growth seen.In conclusion despite their rarity, chondromas should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of nasal tumors, especially those arising from the nasal septum and its close relation to chondrogenic sarcoma.
