Comparison of Submucosal Diathermy and Partial Inferior Turbinectomy in Patients of Inferior Turbinate Hypertrophy.
Ann Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;13(2):203-7.

Objective: Compare the submucosal diathermy (SMD) and partial resection of inferior turbinate (PRIT) postoperatively for nasal bleeding and crusting. Study design: Randomized controlled trials. Place and Duration: Department of ENT and Head & neck Surgery Fauji Foundation hospital Rawalpindi, from 9th Feb, 2013 to 8th Feb, 2014 Results: Nassal bleeding was the outcome of the study, in majority of the patients have less nasal bleeding in Group A as compared to Group B. i.e out of 75 patients in Group A, 12 (16.0) have mild nasal bleeding where as in Group B it was 37 (49.3), similarity 03 (4.0) patients have moderate nassal bleeding in Group A whereas 37 (49.3) have moderate nassal bleeding in Group B. p value of 0.000 showed that Group A (sub mucosal diathermy) was better than Group B (partial inferior turbinectomy) in terms of nassal bleeding. Nasal Crust was observed first week post operatively on anterior rihinoscopy. Out of 150 cases, 28 (37.3) patients were seen nasal crust after 1st week post operatively in Group A whereas 50 (66.7) patients were diagnosed nasal curst in Group B. p value of 0.000 showed that Group A was better than Group B in terms of nassal crust. Conclusion: The results of the study conclude that sub mucosal diathermy is better than partial resection of inferior turbinate for the treatment of hypertrophied inferior turbinate as far as post-op bleeding and nasal crusting is concerned.
