A Comparison of the Complications of Sutureless Colostomies with those of Sutured Colostomies.
Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;5(3,4):242-4.

A retrospective study was made of 128 patients divided into two groups of 35 and 93 subjected to colostomy from August 1996 to August 1999 at West Surgical Ward, Mayo Hospital, Lahore. All these patients presented with penetrating colonic trauma and underwent emergency loop colostomy. Various complications associated with sutureless colostomy whereby the bowel is not sutured to the peritoneum, fascia or skin were compared with those seen in cases which had these bowel sutured to the peritoneum, fascia and skin. The results were nearly comparable with complication rate of 25.7% for Group 1 (35 patients with sutured colostomy) against a complication rate of 25.8% for Group 11(93 patients with sutureless colostomy). From the study it is concluded that it is not the suturing of the bowel to the peritoneum, fascia or skin which is responsible for preventing the mechanical complication associated with colostomy rather its technical error in constructing the stoma, which determined the incidence of colostomy associated complications. thus sutured colostomy is in no way superior to sutureless colostomy.
