Prevalence of Overweight, Obesity and its Association with Occupational Stress among Nurses.

Objective: To determine prevalence of obesity and to examine possible association between overweight, obesity and work-related stress among nurses in Karachi, Pakistan Methodology: This analytical cross-sectional study was carried out at Dow University Hospital and Civil hospital Karachi from January to November 2015. Data was collected from 356 registered nurses of both genders through semi structured and pretested questionnaire. Subjects were approached by non-probability sampling method. SPSS version 21.0 was used for data entry and analysis. Results: In this study, there were 55.05% and 44.94% male and female subjects respectively. Majority of nurses 75.8% had severe work-related stress. This study results affirmed that in both gender 15.3% were under weight, 21.1% were overweight and 14.9% were obese. Percentages of overweight and obesity in female nurses were 23.8% and 13.8% respectively. 21.4% male nurses were overweight and 15.8%male nurses were obese. Furthermore, 23.4% and 19.6 % married male and female nurses were overweight and obese respectively. There was no statistical significant association between BMI and stress level (p-value=0.142). Moreover, chisquare test was used, no statistical associations were established when each BMI category were tested with outcome variable, p-values were greater than 0.05. Conclusion: The study shows no association of overweight and obesity with occupational stress.
