Al-Shifa J Ophthalmol Jan ;11(1):13-7.

Aims:To assess the incidence of endophthalmitis in adults after cataract surgery at a tertiary care eye hospital. Study Design: Retrospective observational study Methods:Records of 2935 patients were reviewed for a period of six months from 1st May 2014 to 30th October 2014 presenting at the general and subsidized OPD of a tertiary care eye hospital. After ethical approval structured performa were filled. Results:The incidence rate of endophthalmitis was only 0.04%. Maximum cases were of ECCE 76.92% while the rate was quite low in phacoemulsification 23.0%. The time of presentation with symptoms suggestive of endophthalmitis was within one month of cataract surgery for most of the cases. Furthermore the presentation was early in phacoemulsification as compared to ECCE. Presentation period ranged from one week to two and a half months. Data was also reviewed for any identifiable risk factor that could have contributed towards endophthalmitis. It was recognizable in only 3 cases and included retinal detachment, raised per op intraocular pressure and diabetes mellitus. Additional observations included a greater number of females developing endophthalmitis and maximum cases had right eye involvement. Conclusion:There is a low incidence of endophthalmitis post cataract extraction being minimum for phacoemulsification. Al-Shifa Journal of Ophthalmology
