Intraocular pressure control after combined manual small incison cataract surgery augmented with mitomycin-c.
Al-Shifa J Ophthalmol Jan ;11(2):52-61.

Introduction: Glaucoma can be treated medically or surgically. There is no sufficient evidence that medical or surgical treatment should be used as a standard protocol. Combined cataract surgery can be performed in eyes with cataract and glaucoma to address both pathologies simultaneously. Three different surgical procedures, phacoemulsification, MSICS and conventional extracapsular cataract extraction combined with trabeculectomy are available. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in the Department of ophthalmology, Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar from March 2013-December 2014. Through a descriptive cross sectional Study Design, a total of 139patients presenting with glaucoma with age related cataract were included in the study in a consecutive manner and subjected to Manual small incision cataract surgery with mitomycin C. All patients were followed up after 60 days of treatment and results were recorded. Results: The mean age of the patients in our sample was 61.7 + 8.7 years. The mean baseline IOP was 27.5mmHg + 3.5 and the mean postoperative IOP was 17.3mmHg+ 5.3 with a mean change of 10.7mmHg + 6.3. The difference between baseline and follow up IOP was statistically significant (p 0.001). Conclusion: Combined Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery with mitomycin C reduces intraocular pressure significantly and can be a useful treatment option for patients with glaucoma and age related cataract.
