Prevalence of Eye Diseases among Patients Presenting at Eye Out Patient Department at Fauji Foundation Teaching Hospital, Rawalpindi.

Aims: To evaluate pattern of different diseases in patients presenting in eye out patient department (OPD) at Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi. Study Design: Descriptive study. Place and Duration of Study: Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi. Data was collected over period of one month from 30th March 2014 to 1st April 2014. Results: Out of 1065 patients examined in Eye OPD, refractive errors were most common (29.2 %, 311 patients), followed by cataract (27.1%, 289 patients). Other common eye problems were glaucoma (10.9%, 117 patients), corneal ulcers (8.7%, 93 patients) and chalazion (7.8%, 84 patients). Less common eye diseases included conjunctival disorders (5%), dacryocystitis (4.5%), diabetic retinopathy (2.9%), uveitis (1.8%) and retinal detachment (1.5%). Conclusion: Refractive errors and cataract were the most common eye diseases followed by glaucoma, corneal ulcers and chalazion. There is a higher prevalence of non-inflammatory causes of decreased vision (cataract and refractive errors) as compared to inflammatory causes (uveitis, chalazion).
