J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;9(4):184-6.

Foreign body aspiration is a common problem in ENT practice. An inhaled foreign body can become a serious matter if it results in acute respiratory distress or if it remains unrecognized for a long period. In this paper we analyse the management of subglottic foreign bodies. Although foreign bodies most often lodge in the bronchi, laryngo-tracheal foreign bodies may also occur and are potentially dangerous. Specifically, subglottic foreign bodies present unique challenge to clinician. In this paper, we present 12 cases of subglottic foreign bodies. These cases were misdiagnosed and being treated as asthma or laryngo-tracheobronchitis. Majority of the sufferers (70%) were between 1-3 years of age. The foreign bodies recovered on laryngoscopic examination were mostly betel nuts (58.34%). There was no death while treating such cases. High index of suspicion is mandatory to arrive at correct diagnosis.
