Quality of Life in Patients with Acne vulgaris.

Objective: To measure the effect of acne vulgaris on quality of life of patients. Design: A cross-sectional study. Place and Duration: Outpatient Department of Dermatology of Mayo Hospital, Lahore, from March, 2001 to May, 2001. Subjects and Methods: One hundred known patients (50 males and 50 females) of acne completed the Urdu version of Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), which is a validated questionnaire to assess the impact of various skin disorders on quality of life. Results: The mean DLQI score was 11.93 + 6.51, range 1-25. There was no statistical difference in the mean DLQI score of male (12.5 + 6.9) and female patients (11.4 + 6.07). Patients in age group less than 20 years (n=63) had a higher DLQI (13.0 + 6.6) as compared to those who were more than 20 years (11.0 + 6.1), p< 0.05. Patients with severe degree of acne (13.8 + 6.42) also showed greater impact on the quality of life as compared to those with mild acne (10.06 + 5.83). Reviewing the patterns of handicap the question regarding the embarrassment and self consciousness scored highest 1.92 and 1.98 in males and females, respectively. Conclusion: Life quality is affected equally in males and females and directly corresponds to the disease severity. The effect of acne vulgaris on quality of life was significantly higher in patients younger than 20 years.
