The awareness of AIDS in Medical Students.

Objective: To assess the awareness of AIDS among the pre-clinical medical students. Design: A cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out in the Department of Anatomy, Sindh Medical College, Karachi, and completed in one month. Subjects and Methods: Three hundred and seventeen (317) students were included in this study, out of them 172 students were of 1st year and 145 were of 2nd year. Each subject was asked to fill up a proforma designed to assess the knowledge about definition, etiological agent, presentation, prevention, treatment, lymphoid organs, lymphoid cells and naming of famous people dying of AIDS. Results: The majority of the students had good knowledge of definition, etiological agent and spread naming of lymphoid organs and cells but their knowledge was poor about the prevention and treatment of AIDS and naming of famous people dying of AIDS. Conclusion: Our group included pre-clinical medical students who were more educated than general public. There is intense need for mass media campaign against AIDS.
