Radiotherapy of Urinary Bladder Tumors: Experience at Mayo Hospital, Lahore..

From September 1995 to August 1998 a retrospective analysis of 73 patients of bladder cancer was done in the Department of Clinical Oncology (Radiotherapy) Mayo Hospital Lahore. Fifty-eight patients (79.45%) were male and 15 (20.54%) were female. The age range of patients was 7 months to 93 years. Sixty patients (82.19%) were having transitional cell carcinoma, 6 (8.21%) had squamous cell carcinoma and 3 (4.10%) had rhabdomyosarcoma of the bladder. In 4 patients (5.47%) histopathology was not specific of a particular tumour type. In 60 patients with transitional cell carcinoma 7 patients (11.66%) had grade I tumour, 10 ( 16.66% ) had grade II, 24 ( 40% ) had grade III and 5 ( 8.33% ) had grade IV tumour. Radiotherapy was given to all 60 patients with transitional cell carcinoma. In 20 patients radiation dose upto 3000 cGys could be delivered. In 30 patients upto 5000 cGys and in only 10 patients doses greater than 5000 cGys could be delivered. The compliance of patients was less than satisfactory, 44 patients did not comply with full treatment. In the remaining 16 evaluable patients only 7 patients 43.75%) were free of tumour at three months and 9 patients ( 56.25% ) had residual disease at three months.
