Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;5(3,4):325-7.

Differentiation between homicidal and suicidal cut throats is very important and difficult as well. 837 autopsies conducted by the authors during 1984-1996, were reviewed. It was found that majority of the cases were homicidal cut wounds with male predominance, lying within age range of 21-30 years. Defense wounds , tailing phenomenon and associated injuries were seen in majority of homicidal cases with wound present below the level of thyroid cartilage. Suicidal cut throat were associated with tentative cuts with wound at or above the level of thyroid cartilage. It was found therefore, that the characteristics of homicidal and suicidal cut throats are definite but still more parameters are to be explored to reach at a final conclusion.
