Frequency of Neck Pain Due to School Bag Usage among Students of Public High Schools in Lahore, Pakistan.

Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal problem that is felt in cervical region which is from occiput to the upper thoracic region. Schoolbags of students are considered the major risk factor for neck pain in students. The purpose of study is to determine the frequency of neck pain due to schoolbags usage among students of four public high schools of Lahore, Pakistan. Data was collected from thousand students aged between 12 to 20 years from four different Public High Schools of Lahore, Pakistan which were selected randomly by lottery method. These schools included Divisional Public school, Pakistan Public School, F.G. Abid Majeed High School and F.G. Girls Public High School. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 21. The frequency of neck pain in students carrying school bags was 56.6% (566 respondents). The mean of neck pain intensity was 4.7 ± 2.148. Gender was associated with neck pain (p<0.05) with girls more likely to suffered from neck pain than boys. Weight, type and manner of carrying schoolbags were also related to cervical pain (p<0.05) while duration of carrying schoolbags had no association with neck pain (p>0.05).This study concluded high frequency of neck pain due to heavy schoolbag usage.
