Prevalence of Anti Hepatitis C antibodies in healthy blood donors at Services Hospital Lahore.

Cirrhosis of liver is one of the common cause of both morbidity and mortality world over. HCV infection is very rapidly increasing as a major cause of cirrhosis. This study was done to find out the sero prevalence of HCV in healthy blood donors attending blood bank of Services Hospital, Lahore. 5789 subjects were tested out of which 288 (4.97%) cases were positive. Majority (217) of cases were between 21-30 years of age. Of the 288 cases 261 were male and only 27 were female. Percentage of anti HCV positive cases by sex is 9.89% in women as compared to 4.73% in male and the difference is highly significant (P<0.01). History of jaundice was obtained in five (1.73%), of blood transfusion in four (1.38%), of hospitalization in three (1.04%) and only two (0.69%) had past history of surgery. Early screening of HCV is sought because at early stage many treatment modalities are available for this disease.
