Incidence and Types of Congenital Abnormalities Detected on Antenatal Ultrasound Examination in Lady Willingdon Hospital, Lahore.

Aim: To determine the incidence and types of congenital abnormalities detected on antenatal ultrasound examination in Lady Willingdon Hospital, Lahore. Methods: This study was performed in ultrasound department of LWH from 4th August 2004 to 31st December 2011 Results: 1794 congenitally abnormal fetuses were diagnosed. Among the 1794 cases listed in this study, a very high percentage (65.99%) involved CNS. This is followed mainly by involvement of urinary system (10.51%) and GIT involvement (9.41%). Conclusion: Counseling regarding completion of family at an earlier age, cousin marriages, avoidance of certain environmental hazards, having serial antenatal ultrasound examinations and food and dietary supplementation may help to reduce the incidence of congenital abnormalities in a significant way.
