Frequency and Outcome of Premature Infants Admitted in Special Care Baby Unit (Nursery), Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar, KPK Pakistan.

Objective: This study aimed to determine the frequency and outcome of preterm neonates admitted in Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) Peshawar, KPK Pakistan during 2016. Study design: Cross sectional study. Place and duration of study: It was conducted in nursery unit of KTH Peshawar and the data was compiled and analyzed in 4 months from September 2017 to December 2017. Material and method: A total of 4513 babies were admitted in nursery unit, KTH in 2016. Among them, 1430 were preterm infants. These infants were further divided in different subgroups and their outcome was determined. Results: Data on these 1430 premature infants was analyzed and it was found that mortality was highest among those weighing between 1.1 kg to 1.5 kg (46.02%) and the best outcome was observed in those weighing between 2.1 kg to 2.41 kg (83.95%). Most of the admissions were for prematurity/low birth weight (47%), followed by neonatal sepsis (30.48%) and least cases were of jaundice (3.56%). Conclusion: Preterm mortality in KTH is alarming. The study highlights the need for comprehensive strategy and more research focusing on the care of preterm infants.
