Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;9(2):137-40.

Thalassemia and Haemophilia are both life-long crippling genetic disorders, both needed frequent blood or blood product transfusions. These disorders leads to premature deaths due to complication of disease and transfusion. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Punjab province to evaluate thalassemia and hemophilia services in the current health care delivery system. The role of NGO`s in provision of thalassemia / hemophilia was also studied as a component of this survey. In this survey 27 health facilities representing Govt., NGO`s and Private Sector were sampled from the Punjab. The paediatrics units, laboratory services, transfusion services and registration services related to thalassemia and hemophilia were evaluated. The mechanisms of liaison between various components of services were also examined. The registration load shared by NGO`s was 78.0% as compared to 9% by the Govt. health sector. The registration load shared by collaboration of Govt. and NGO`s was 13% while private health sector playing no role in registration of thalassemia and hemophilia patients. The health facilities owned by the Govt. sector were 70% as compared to 15% by NGO`s. There was no formal liaison for sharing of various therapeutic / diagnostic services within the institutions and between various sectors. There must be some clear policy and liaison for sharing of services / resources between NGO`s and Government health sector to achieve the maximum benefits for these patients.
