Prelacteal Feeding Practices among Primigravida Mothers.

Background: Prelacteal feed is common practice in different parts of the world. However, it is major cause of lactation failure and infection in newborn. Objective: To determine the prelacteal feeding practices among primigravida mothers. Methods: This cross sectional survey was conducted in the department of Paediatrics, King Edward Medical University/Mayo Hospital, Lahore from April to September 2017. A total of 100 primigravida mothers were included in the study by non-probability convenient sampling. The study instrument used was the question naire regarding practices of mothers about prelacteal feeding. The data were entered in SPSS 22 for statistical analysis. Chi square test was applied to see the difference between responses. A p value of <0.005 was considered to be significant.Results: The study participants were 100 primigravida mothers. Most of the mothers (62% ) were ≤ 25 years. Out of 100, 31% mothers were illiterate, 77% were house wives while 37% belong to lower socioeconomic status. Out of 100, 33(33%) primigravida mothers offered colostrum to their newborn babies, whereas 67(67%) primigravida mothers offered prelacteal feed. Among these 67 mothers, 40% offered formula milk, followed by honey (18%), ghutti (13%), araq (8%), gripe water (6%), sugar water (4%) and plain water (3%). However, the feeding practices were statistically insignificant with the educational status of mothers. Conclusion: Prelacteal feeding practice is common among primigravida mothers.
