Human immunodeficiency virus causes a spectrum of illnesses that decrease the cellular immunity of patient increasing vulnerability to get opportunistic infections. Studies in developing countries have shown gaps in knowledge, attitude and practices. There is a fear of contagion with ambivalent attitudes towards HIV/AIDS and non-adherence to the universal precautions. This cross-sectional study was planned to raise awareness and assess knowledge of rural population of Punjab. This study concluded that knowledge about HIV/AIDS and practices to prevent its spread are very inadequate and health education should be started to address these issues.
