J Postgrad Med Inst Jan ;15(1):79-83.

The response of cholestyramine, a bile acid sequestrant was studied in 30 patients in whom conventional therapy had failed to control their symptoms. These patients were categorized into the following four groups: Group A: Patients with crohn`s disease with ileal involvement; Group B: Patients with biliary reflux gastritis; either in association with gallstones or following cholecystotomy or in patients with idiopathic biliary reflux gastritis; Group C: Post-cholecytotomy patients with diarrhea; Group D: Irritable bowel syndrome, with predominant diarrhoea In group A patients the frequency of bowel was reduced to about two to three motions per day, while in group B, C and D clinical improvement was found in 72.7%, 75% and 76.9% respectively. It was found that where conventional therapy had failed bile acid sequestrants have a definite role both in symptomatic relief as well as the wellbeing of these patients.
