It is a syndrome of rapidly developing clinical signs of focal (or global) disturbance of cerebral function, with symptoms lasting for 24 hours or more, or leading to death, with no apparent cause other than vascular origin. The definition includes sub-arachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) but excludes TIA`s, subdural haematomas, and haemorrhage or infarctions caused by infections or tumours. It also excludes silent cerebral infarctions. This is an Editorial.
