Serum Magnesium in Acute Myocardial Infarction and its Relationwith Arrythmias.
Pak J Med Health Sci Jan ;13(1):309-11.

Background: Magnesium plays a key role in the pathogenesis of myocardial infarction and its complication like arrhythmia.Low serum magnesium levels are associated with decreased electrical stability and hence increased incidence of arrhythmias. Also it induces hyperlipidemia leading to accelerated plaque formation Aim: To know the relationship between the serum magnesium levels and arrhythmias in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Method: 60 consecutive patients meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled and their serum magnesium measured on day 1 and day 5. Results: There is significant difference in Magnesium levels in patients with and without arrhythmias. (p<0.001)Conclusion: In acute myocardial infarction, patients with low magnesium levels are more prone to get arrhythmias. So magnesium treatment can be considered in patients of acute myocardial infarction with low magnesium levels.
