Active isolated stretching; a new emerging remedy.
Rawal Med J Jan ;44(3):646-8.

Over the last few years, static stretching has been advocated as a gold standard to improve muscle flexibility and extensibility of soft tissues. However, prolong static stretching may reduce the local circulation and can result in local ischemia and accumulation of lactic acid. It may be a source of fatigue, soft tissue injury or overuse syndrome. Most patients experience discomfort and pain with static stretching that keeps them away from participating in flexibility exercises. Active Isolated Stretching is a stretching maneuver that augments the effects of stretching and eliminates a sense of discomfort and pain. It also helps in the restoration of fascia and muscle inflexibility. Active Isolated Stretching provides an effective and dynamic facilitated stretching to avoid static reflex.
