Frequency of thrombocytopenia in pregnancy induced hypertension.

Objective: To determine the frequency of thrombocytopenia in pregnancy induced hypertension at Sheikh Zaid Women Hospital, Larkana. Methodology: Women with gestational age above 20 weeks with pregnancy induced hypertension, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia with platelet count below 150x109/l were enrolled in the study. Those with history of chronic hypertension before pregnancy or before 20 weeks of pregnancy, known hepatic dysfunction, hemorrhagic disorders, renal disease and history of drug intake like (heparin, warfarin) were excluded from study. Frequency and percentage was calculated for thrombocytopenia, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. Results: Mean age of the women was 29.18+-2.67 years. Thrombocytopenia was seen in 60(39.21%) patients. Nineteen (12.4%) women had eclampsia and 40 (26.1%) pre-eclampsia. Conclusion: Overall prevalence of thrombocytopenia was 39.21%. If diagnosed during antenatal period, it could be treated at time before developments of its manifestations.
