Epidemiology of Breast Cancer findings from hospital patients.

The most common invasive cancer in women is breast cancer. It is estimated that 5% of breast cancer cases are familial and majority of these cases are attributable to two genes. So to evaluate risk factors of breast cancer a hospital based study was conducted on 1060 breast cancer women and 500 controls. There were five male breast cancer patients (0.47%). Breast cancer women were highest in number (36.70%) marrying between 22 to 31 years age. Compared to controls, breast cancer women attained significantly earlier age at menarche and menopause (P<0.001). Male offspring bores to breast cancer patients were significantly less in number (P<0.001) as compared to females. A high percentage of patients had cancer in their left mammary glands (58.6%). Direct inheritance of breast cancer was, seen in 4.06% of the families. Sisters of breast cancer cases were more affected with this disease than their mothers (47.37%).
