Frequency of insulin resistance in patients with hypovitaminosis D.

Objective: To assess the frequency of insulin resistance in patients with Hypovitaminosis D. Study design: Cross sectional study. Place & duration of study: Department of Chemical Pathology and Endocrinology PNS SHIFA hospital Karachi, one year after approval of synopsis. Materials and Methods: A total of 157 subjects found to be having Hypovitaminosis D were included in this study. Blood samples of subjects for serum Vitamin D, fasting plasma glucose, and insulin (fasting) analysis was drawn from ante-cubital vein aseptically in chilled plain serum tubes with gel from all the enrolled patients. All the data was entered on Proforma attached as annexure A. Results: Frequency of insulin resistance (IR) in patients with hypovitaminosis D was observed in 44.59% (70/157).Conclusion: The results of our study show that subjects with hypovitaminosis D are at higher risk of insulin resistance. A strategy could be sound to screen IR by Vitamin D testing and promote treatment which could prevent IR.
