Glycemic abnormalities in transfusion dependent thalassemia patients..

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of diabetic abnormalities i.e. Diabetes Mellitus and Impaired Fasting Glucose in Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia patients. Study Design: Cross Sectional study. Setting: Center for Thalassemia Care and Patho-Care Laboratory Rahim Yar Khan, Pakistan. Period: 6 Months from July 2018 to December 2018. Material & Methods: Convenient sampling technique was used. Patients of Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia bearing age more than 10 years were studied. Fasting Plasma Glucose was determined by taking Fasting Blood samples of 151 patients of Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia. A questionnaire was designed and all data collected was recorded. SPSS version 20 used to analyze the data. Results: 151 patients were included in the study; 39.1% females and 60.9 % males. Overall 2.0 % patients were found to have Diabetes Mellitus while 4.6% had Impaired Fasting Glucose. Conclusions: The results of this study indicated that frequency of Impaired Fasting Glucose is higher as compared to Diabetes Mellitus in Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia patients.
