Early postoperative morbidity and mortality of Colorectal Cancer Surgery.
J Surg Pak Jan ;8(3):27-9.

Colorectal carcinoma is one of the commonest malignancies in older age group. It is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Contrary to general belief surgical intervention does not increase morbidity related to this carcinoma in this age group. In this study we document our experience of managment of patients with colorectal carcinoma over a period of 5 years at Florence Nightingale Hospital, Dusseldorf, Germany. There were 272 patients who underwent surgery for this tumor. 225 patients underwent curative resection, 33 underwent palliative resection and in 14 only colostomy or by pass was done. Mean observation period was 31 months. Surgical complications developed in 50 (18.4%) patients. Only 2 (0.7%) patients died within 30 days after surgery. We thus conclude that surgical intervention does not increase morbidity or mortality for colorectal carcinoma in older age group.
