Frequency of urinary tract infection in type 2 DM attending at Dow University Hospital Karachi, Pakistan.

Objective: To observe the frequency of UTI in DM type 2 patients in Karachi, Pakistan. Methodology: A sample of 350 known type II diabetic patients aged more than 30 years of either gender was selected in this observational descriptive cross-sectional study. A six months study from July to December 2019 conducted at DUH, Karachi. A non-probability convenient sampling technique was used. Age, gender, BMI, HBA1c, duration of diabetes, and urine culture reports (positive or negative) were recorded. Results: Out of 350 DM type 2 patients, 225 (64.29%) were female and 125 (35.71%) male. Mean age was 45.25+2.5 years, mean BMI was 29.25+3.95 kg/m2, mean HBA1c was 8.29+ 4.89 and mean duration of diabetes was 10.19+2.12 years. Over of all patients, UTI was found in 164 (46. 86%) patients; out of these, 121 (73.785%) were female and 43 (26.22%) male. E.coli was the most common cause of UTI (71.43%) followed by Enterobacteriaceae (19.71%). Conclusion: DM type 2 patients were found to be more susceptible to UTI.
