Pak Paed J Jan ;19(4):141-5.

Eighty five children (55 boys and 30 girls) with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) seen at Pediatric Department Mayo Hospital Lahore, during a 9-1/2 years period were reviewed retrospectively with regard to their clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, and management. The age of onset ranged from 4 months to 11 years with a mean of G years. Fifty eight cases presented as acute ITP while twenty seven cases presented as chronic ITP. In a search for a predictor of chronic disease, the platelet counts at 4 weeks and 3 months after diagnosis were found to be a significant factor for prediction of chronicity of ITP. If the platelet counts are less than 100,000/cmm during these periods, the risk of chronic ITP is increased and vice versa.
