Effectiveness of intraumbilical oxytocin in retained placenta: a randomized control trial.

Objective: To determine the efficacy of intraumbilical oxytocin administration in patients with retained placenta versus placebo. Methodology: This study was conducted in department of obstetrics and gynecology, Hazrat Bari Imam General Hospital, Islamabad from December 2017 to June 2018. Ninety patients with retained placenta were included in the study and were divided into Group A and B each with 45 patients. Sampling technique was randomized controlled trial non-probability consecutive. Group A received Intraumbilical oxytocin and group B received normal saline. Results: A total of 90 cases were enrolled, majority of the patients in both Groups were between 26-30 years of age, i.e. 53.33%(n=24) in Group A and 48.89%(n=22) in group B. Efficacy was 57.78% in Group A and 24.44 % in Group B (p=0.002). Conclusion: Umbilical vein oxytocin administration is significantly effective than placebo in women with retained placenta.
