Rawal Med J Jan ;46(3):584-584.

Objective: To determine the frequency of hyperuricemia with knee osteoarthritis. Methodology: This descriptive case series was done at Fauji Foundation Hospital Rawalpindi from March to August 2019. Sample was selected from the outpatients. Patients 40 years of age or above, with history and/or examination finding suggestive of osteoarthritis were included in the study whereas those with history of hypertension, malignancy, gout and taking thiazide diuretics, anti-tuberculosis drugs were excluded. Gender and duration of symptoms were recorded. Recent knee x rays of the patients and samples for fasting serum uric acid levels were taken. Results: Out of 267 patients, 114 (42.7) were male and 153 (57.3) female. Mean age (years) was 50.63+11.32. Mean serum uric acid (mg/dl) was 5.45+3.88. The frequency and percentage of hyperuricemia in male (>7.2 mg/dl) and female (>6.0 mg/dl) patients was 30 (11.2) and 73 (27.3), respectively. Conclusion: There is increased frequency of high serum uric acid in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
