Pak J Pathol Jan ;7(3):149-51.

Erythrocytosis (inappropriately termed polycythemia) refers to a pathological state when the hematocrit exceeds fifty five percent of the total blood volume. Several clinical conditions may adversely influence the natural history of a congenital heart disease. Erythrocytosis (secondary, not primary) is one such condition which may impose a threat to the patient`s life, demanding urgent treatment and perhaps a long term prevention. The purpose of this review is to provide a better understanding of this important clinical condition and its management.
