Bleeding diathesis in acute Myeloid Leukemia: Thrombocytopenia alone or in Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy.
J Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;13(2):682-5.

In acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), bleeding tendency is a frequent feature, observed at presentation, during chemotherapy and at relapse. We looked into this problem of bleeding in 60 consecutive cases of AML of all FAB types, and correlated this feature with thrombocytopenia alone or intravascular coagulopathy (DIC). All the sixty cases had thrombocytopenia. It was present alone in 70 % and as a part of DIC in the remaining 30 % of cases. DIC was the most frequent in AML M3 (69 %)followed by in M5 (40 %), M2 (23.1 %), M4 (18.2 %) and M1 (16.6 %), respectively. In relation to age, DIC was the most frequent in the old age group (23.3 %), i.e. between 65 & 75 years.
