Histological pattern of childhood tumors at Children Hospital, P.I.M.S., Islamabad.

This study was conducted to find out the frequency of childhood tumors in different age groups (up to 15 years) and sex. It was based on a retrospective analysis of histopathology records of 8 years at Children Hospital, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad. Data was analyzed to see the histological pattern of tumors in childhood. Further more, frequency of tumors according to sex and different age groups was evaluated. Of 254 cases of childhood tumors, Central Nervous System tumors (29.5%) were the most common, followed by Lymphoma (17.5%), Retinoblastoma (7.5%), Soft tissue sarcoma (6.7%), Bone tumors (5.9%), Sympathetic nervous system tumors (5.5%), Germ cell tumors (3.5%) and Wilm`s tumor (2.7%) in order of frequency. Rest of the tumors included rare entities like squamous cell carcinoma, poorly differentiated tumor, hepatoblastoma, adrenal cortical tumor, Sarcoma botyroides and pulmonary blastoma, etc. It was concluded that the CNS tumors were the most frequent, followed by lymphoma and retinoblastoma. Retinoblastoma were common in 1 to 5 years of age group; genii cell tumors were common in 1 year age group and other were common in more than 5 years of age group. Males were more commonly affected as compared to females in most of the tumors.
