Hospital-acquired infections.
J Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;15(1):886-9.

By definition, a hospital-acquired infection, also called nosocomical infection in American terminology, is one, which the patient is not having or incubating at the time of admission. When patients with decreased resistance against and high susceptibility to, developing infections, at times even compromised, are confined together in a hospital and exposed to a high concentration of microorganisms, which are often selected for their virulence and resistance to antimicrobials, they are likely to develop infections, which were not present at the time of admission. It is generally agreed that infections, which develop more than 48 hours after admission are hospital acquired. This is a review article.
