Health of elderly: global and national perspectives.

During the previous century, survival was considered to be the major threat to the manhood due to multitude of communicable diseases and injuries rampant in the past. Today, however, the scenario is quite different. The subtle increase in the life span of individuals has led to a large increase in the proportion of elderly population (aged sixty years and above), with a rate of growth faster than any age group. This demographic transition is one of the greatest triumphs of humanity; on the other it presents the world with a greatest challenge, the phenomenon of aging. The global aging is envisaged to put increasing economic and social demands on all countries taxing their resources regardless of the developmental status. This is a review article.
