J Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;13(1):631-4.

The breast lumps have always commanded a great deal of attention because of the their being cancerous. Breast cancer is the commonest malignancy affecting females in Pakistan as in the rest of the World. Despite centuries of scientific and medical efforts, cancer of breast remains one of the most dreaded of human man illness. A retrospective study was carried out to see the pattern of breast lesions in surgical specimens received in the Histopathology department, PIMS Islamabad during years 1995 to 1999. All these cases were operated upon for breast lumps (>1cm). Specimen front mule breast were not included. Among the total of 566 cases, carcinoma breast was the most common lesion encountered (31.3%) followed by fibrocystic disease (30.2%). Malignant lesions were mostly in patients of fourth through sixth decade while fibrocystic disease in fourth and fifth decade of life. Fibroadenoma was quite frequent (27.6%) in relatively younger females. Inflammatory breast lesions had reasonable share (7.2%). We concluded that carcinoma of breast is the most common lesion in our female patients undergoing surgery for breast lumps, probably due to late consultation because of cultural, socioeconomic and religious obligations.
