Efficacy and side effects estimation of 5% dapsone gel in the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris.

Background: Acne vulgaris is a disorder of inflammation of pilosebaceous unit, clinically manifest as comedones, papules, nodules and cystic leisons affecting most commonly face and upper trunk.5% Dapsone gel is approved to treat acne vulgaris. Methods: Interventional study was conducted during 6 months period in dermatology out patient department of Akhtar Saeed medical and dental college, Lahore. Patients were enrolled in the study considering inclusion criteria. They were asked to apply 5 % Dapsone gel twice daily on the face for 3 months. They were followed up every 2 weeks to look for possible response  to topical gel. Investigator Global acne severity assessment scale was used. Efficacy was also evaluated by mean percent reduction of lesions. Side effects estimation like burning, stinging, erythema and dryness was noted. Results: At the end of 12 weeks, 5 % Dapsone gel was effective in reduction of inflammatory and non inflammatory leisons by 59.2% and 40.8% respectively. Dapsone gel was found to be tolerable with minimal side effects. Conclusion: 5% Dapsone gel was well tolerated and efficacious in the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris.
