J Pak Med Assoc Jan ;54(10):528-9.

The aim of this study is to assess the quality of these publications on the basis of impact factor (IF) of journals publishing them, a measure frequently used to evaluate quality of journals and papers published. Three countries were selected: Iran, Pakistan and Egypt. Articles published in international journals from these three countries years 1992, 1996 and 2002 were accessed through PubMed databank. The IFs of these journals in 1992, 1996 and 1999 were obtained through the official site of the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) and their IFs in 2002 were assumed to be the same as those in 1999. The mean IF for these 3 countries was calculated separately. In 1992, the number of indexed papers from Iran, Pakistan and Egypt were 61, 82 and 387 respectively. The mean IF of journals publishing Iranian papers was 1.131„b0.940 in 1992, being 1.246„b2.153 for Pakistan and 1.112„b1.639 for Egypt. In 2002, numbers of indexed papers from Iran, Pakistan and Egypt were 508.229, 668 respectively. In the same year, the mean IF of journals publishing Iranian papers was 1.361„b0.984 while it was 1.751„b2.878 for Pakistan and 1.229„b1.573 for Egypt. The results obtained showed 733% quantitative growth of Iranian papers during 1992-2002 period, which was noticeably higher than Pakistan (179%) and Egypt (73%).
