J Surg Pak Jan ;9(3):36-9.

Objectives: To compare the complications of peripherally inserted central catheter versus Internal jugular venous central catheter. Design: A comparative study Place & Duration of Study: Study was conducted in surgical ward 3 Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Karachi from January 2002 to June 2003. Patients And Methods: Seventy patients were included in the study who required central venous catheterization. They were divided into two groups for the purpose of comparison. Complication included arterial puncture and neck haematoma, pneumothorax in one patient each Two patients developed thrombotic complications. In group B of peripherally inserted catheter, a success rate of 85% was attained. Thrombotic complications were seen in 3 patients. Catheter tip malposition was noted in 8 patients. No arterial puncture, pneumothorax or haematoma occurred. Conclusion: Both the routes Le peripherally inserted catheter and central venous catheterization have equal percentage of complications but life threatening complications were more with IJV catheterization.
