Evaluation of thyroid function.

The merits and drawbacks of serum determinations of Thyroid related hormones i.e. thyroxine, triiodothyronine, thyroid stimulating hormone, and free thyroxine are discussed. These are the commonly performed tests of thyroid function. The role of second line tests such as TRH infusion test, serum estimation of thyroxine binding globulin, thyroglobulin, thyroid stimulating immunoglobulins, radioactive iodine uptake test, thyroid ultrasound, thyroid scanning and fine needle biopsy of thyroid is also discussed. A protocol based upon biochemical tests for investigating hyper and hypo functions of the thyroid gland is also given to avoid unnecessary burden over the patients and delay in the establishment of diagnosis. In the end, some of the drugs effecting thyroid function are also discussed.
