J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;14(11):700.

This prospective cross-sectional study was performed at the Emergency department of Aga Khan University Hospital for one-year and included 50 patients. Frequency of anxiety and depression was seen in young adults presenting with chest pain in the ED. All ED patients of less than 40 years with chest pain after exclusion for acute coronary syndrome on history, physical examination and electrocardiography were included. Patients with previous established heart disease were excluded. Aga Khan University Anxiety and Depression Scale (AKUADS) was used as the assessment tool. It consisted of 25 questions regarding anxiety and depression during the last 2 weeks. The aggregated score was added at the end. Out of 50 patients 18 were females and 32 were males. These patients were categorized into two groups according to AKUADS score. In the present study, we found that most of the patients with psychogenic chest pain were females and were housewives. Probably family issues may have some impact on their current presentation. Another observation was that most of the patients were educated, with at least intermediate or graduation level. In many of the patients there were certain stressors which had led young patients to have chest pain.
