Pak J Obstet Gynaecol Jan ;9(2,3):32-5.

Perinatal mortality rates are index of available perinatal services. South Asia presents highest perinatal mortality. National statistics are not available in Pakistan. An attempt has been made to collect statistics of Sheikh Zayed Women Hospital and Chandka Medical College, Larkana during one year period from 1st January 1995 to 31st December 1995. Total number of deliveries at Sheikh Zayed Women Hospital were 1620 with 485 perinatal deaths. Out of which 355 were still births and 130 were early neonatal deaths. The perinatal mortality was 299.3/1000 total births. Most common cause of still births was obstructed labour (114 cases), next common cause being APH (70 cases). Commonest causes of neonatal deaths were Low Birth Weight (LBW) babies (46%) and birth asphyxia (46%). Neonatal sepsis was found in 8% of cases. Perinatal mortality was highest (63%) in the 21-30 years age group and 2-5 parity (43.9% cases). Neonatal mortality was high among preterm babies (46% cases) as well as in male neonates (61.9% of cases). Majority of the patients were delivered vaginally (68 %).
