Pak Postgrad Med J Jan ;13(3):106-11.

Two hundred subjects of diabetes mellitus of both sexes between 25-60 years of age were included in this study, fifty normal healthy males and females of same age group were included as controls. These subjects were divided into four groups, controls, diabetic patients without neuropathy, diabetic patients with asymptomatic neuropathy and the patients of last group treated with alpha lipoic acid 600 mg/day. for 12 weeks. Fasting blood glucose, cholesterol and C.S.F. proteins were estimated, Electrodiagnostic studies (EDX) were carried out to assess quantitative sensory testing (QST) and autonomic function testing (AFT). In the diabetic patients after lipoic acid supplementation highly significant improvement (P < .001) in metabolic determinants like blood glucose, cholesterol and C.S.F. proteins Was noticed. E.M.G. changes in diabetic patients nearly reverted to normal after lipoic acid supplementation while less significant improvement was noticed in persons not taking lipoic acid supplements. All the diabetic patients were taking anti diabetic drugs as routine.
