Pak J Pathol Jan ;10(4):9-11.

Malaria is a widespread parasitic infection in the tropical countries which may be associated with thrombocytopenia. In this perspective study, designed at pathology deptt PNS Shifa, the blood complete picture was performed in all those patients, who were hospitalized or reported with fever to PNS Shifa between 1st Jan 1996 to Dec 1997. On examination of peripheral blood film stained with Lesihmans stain and fields stain, a total 297 cases of malaria were diagnosed. At the time of diagnosis, the platelet counts were performed by automated counter and in case of thrombocytopenia the counts were repeated by manual method. In 62.6% of patients suffering from malaria the platelet count was below 140 x 109/1.
