Factors affecting the long term results of proximal tibial osteotomy in osteoarthrits of the knee joint.

This long term study was carried out to analyze the factors that influence the satisfactory function of the knee joint after proximal tibial osteotomy. Forty patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee joint with varus deforimities were treated with proximal tibial osteotomy and followed for eight years, the main factors that adversely affected the knee function are obesity, advanced age and post-operative under correction. On the average, the probabilities for continued useful function of the knee at tested intervals were 80% one year, 60% three years, 60% five years and 45% eight years.
