Histopathological features of acute appendicitis in Kerman-Iran.

Objective: To evaluate histopathologic features of appendix after appendectomy. Methods: A total of 2753 appendices specimen that had been received in the department of pathology of two major hospitals in Kerman-Iran were reviewed by two pathologists and classified as follows: Normal, early acute, acute, suppurative or purulent, gangrenous, and perforated appendicitis. Results: There were 54.6% males with average age of 24.9?13.3 years and 76.6% were under 30 years of age. Of all specimens, 34.2% were histopathologically normal while 65.8% showed inflammation. Perforation was observed to 0.8%. There were significant differences between sex and stage of development of appendicitis. Seasonal differences were found in incidence. Conclusion: Acute appendicitis was more frequent in men than women, and increased specially in ages19-30 years. It was more frequent and higher in stage in winter season.
