Pattern of microvascular complications and associated comorbidities amongst Diabetic patients at a tertiary care hospital.

Objective: To assess the frequency pattern of retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy as well as associated other co morbidities in diabetic patients. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted at Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic diseases, Postgraduate Medical Institute, Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar. Two hundred and two, indoor diabetic patients during one-year duration of time were interviewed, examined and investigated for retinopathy, nephropathy and peripheral sensory neuropathy. Critically ill patients requiring intensive care treatment and pregnant diabetics were excluded from the study. Relevant information about coronary artery disease, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, stroke, symptomatic peripheral arterial disease and obesity was also obtained. Results: Out of 202 cases, 73(36.2%) were males and 129(63.8%) were females. Retinopathy was detected in 58% cases (n=118); nephropathy in 61.4% cases (n=124) and neuropathy was present in 39.6% cases (n=80). Frequency of hypertension, coronary artery disease (CAD), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high BMI was 58.9%, 7.9%, 56.2%, 68.1% and 43% respectively. Conclusion: Microvascular complications are very common in our diabetic patients. Likewise, Hypertension, CAD, obesity and dyslipidemia were common among them.
