Infect Dis J Jan ;14(3):93-7.

In Nigeria like most African countries, Hansen`s disease (leprosy) is declining, but the social stigma, discrimination and prejudices are still highly prevalent. This paper is aimed at finding a realistic rehabilitation programme when eliminates these residual socio-psychological problems associated with the disease. Eighty out of 147 persons treated for Hansen`s disease participated in focus group discussion sessions relating to knowledge of the disease, beliefs and practices and rehabilitation programmes. The data analysis using the multi-dimensional scaling technique shows that current rehabilitation practices patterned in line with the World Health Organization community based rehabilitation is not fulfilling the desired objectives in Nigeria. Consequently a holistic model of rehabilitating these persons is proposed.
